Brake problem, trying to figure out the issue....? Brake problem, trying to figure out the issue....? So my girlfriends car is pretty messed up, first, her muffler cracked, then shortly after/before her brakes BARELY work. I change my own pads/rotors and do so for other so I know a little bit about brakes. I checked the brake fluid and its full. Her pads and rotors are only 6 months old and there's plenty of material left on the pads. I did some further investigation and I squeezed the brake hose on each of the two front tires while my girlfriend pumped the brakes. The drivers side hose showed signs of pressure, the passenger side diddnt, it was as if the push of the brakes diddnt pressurize the fluid at all on that side, but if there was a leak in the hose/break line, she would be loosing fluid and she's not. I was wondering if this could be an issue with the combination valve, because thats what im thinking. Im trying to learn a little bit more about it so I dont get screwed by a mechanic, what is the average price for such a repair? (2000 saturn SL1 btw) car insurance. Oldsmobile . How to Adjust a Two-Barrel Rochester CarburetorThe two-barrel Rochester carburetor is designed with two adjustment screws, located in the front of the carburetor near the base. Adjusting the carburetor is fairly simple and the adjustment screws are easy to access. The idle fuel mixture screw on the left side and the idle speed screw on the right side should be adjusted to read the same on the vacuum gauge at the highest readings possible to get the best performance from your engine. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Vacuum gauge Step by Step : 1 Locate the two idle adjustment screws in the front of the two-barrel Rochester carburetor and turn both screws clockwise with a screwdriver until they are completely closed. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws. 2 Turn the adjustment screws back, counterclockwise one and a half turns with the screwdriver to use as a starting point for your adjustments. Start the engine and let it warm up for about five minutes. 3 Remove the rubber vacuum hose from the base of the carburetor and attach a vacuum gauge to the vacuum port at the base. Start with the idle fuel mixture screw on the left side of the carburetor, looking at it from the front of the vehicle and turn the screw a quarter turn. 4 Turn the idle speed screw on the right side a quarter turn and alternate back and forth, adjusting the screws until you get the highest rpm readings possible on the vacuum gauge with the engine running smoothly. Continue the adjustments, alternating between them until both are reading the same rpm while running smoothly. 5 Adjust both screws one final time by turning them a quarter turn counterclockwise and verify that both are reading the same rpm. Remove the vacuum gauge and reattach the rubber vacuum hose to the vacuum port. Shut the engine off. Tips & Warnings Be careful of moving engine parts when adjusting the two-barrel Rochester carburetor with the motor running.
Oldsmobile . How to Adjust a Carburetor in a 1983 BuickOlder Buick model years, including the 1983 Buick, contain carburetors instead of the fuel injection systems that are in newer cars. These devices control the air and fuel flow within your engine. Therefore, it is important to adjust these screws so that they are even. This will give you the best fuel mileage for your older Buick. The adjustment process is something that can be done by almost any Buick owner. It will also save you time and money to do the job yourself rather than hiring a professional. The process of adjusting a 1983 Buick carburetor is like that of any car year or model. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Adjustable wrench Screwdriver Vacuum gauge Step by Step : 1 Remove the air cleaner from the Buick's carburetor. Loosen and remove the screws that hold the air cleaner on the carburetor by turning the screws counterclockwise with a screwdriver. 2 Locate the air and fuel adjustment screws near the choke rod and barrel of the carburetor. 3 Turn the air adjustment screw counterclockwise one and one half turns with a screwdriver. 4 Turn the fuel adjustment screws two and one half turns counterclockwise so that they are all completely closed. 5 Pull off the rubber vacuum hose from the bottom of the carburetor with your hand. 6 Slide the vacuum gage over the connection on the carburetor from which your just removed the vacuum hose. 7 Start your 1983 Buick's engine by inserting the key in the ignition and turning it to the "on" position. Allow the engine to warm up for 5-10 minutes. 8 Turn the fuel adjustment screws clockwise one quarter turn at a time with a screwdriver until all of the screws are reading 850 RPMs on the vacuum gauge. 9 Turn the air adjustment screw clockwise with a screwdriver until it reads 850 RPMs on the vacuum gauge. Step by Step : 10 Turn off your Buick's engine. Turn the ignition key to the "off" position. Remove the key from the ignition. Step by Step : 11 Pull the vacuum gauge from the connection on the carburetor with your hand. Step by Step : 12 Replace the vacuum hose on the carburetor's connection from which it was previously removed. GMC 3500 Club Coupe. * 3. Jot down the proper part numbers given for your vehicle's points, condenser, distributor cap, and rotor on your Specifications Record. The points and condenser are sometimes packaged together as a tune-up kit. You may not need to replace the cap and rotor now, but the data will be handy when you do. Changing \four Spark Ptuqs How often you replace spark plugs depends on the type of plugs you have. You may have 30,000-mile plugs, or — if the plugs have platinum tips — they may be good for up to 100,000 miles. (For detailed information about what spark plugs do, see Chapter 5.) Finding your spark plugs Of course, before you can change your spark plugs, you have to find them. Look for a set of thick wires (or thin cables) that enter your engine block in neat rows — on both sides if you have a V-6 or V-8 engine, or on one side if you have a straight 4- or 6-cylinder engine (also called an in-line engine). These spark-plug wires run from the distributor (or ignition coil) to the spark plugs. O t O Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System Oldsmobile . Before you take care of your spark plugs, you must understand what the terms cylinder sequence and firing order mean. Cylinder sequence The cylinder sequence of an engine is the order in which the cylinders of the engine are numbered. This sequence varies from one type of vehicle to another, depending on whether it has front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive and whether the vehicle has a "straight" (sometimes called "in-line") engine, a V-type engine, or a transverse engine. Here are cylinder sequences for all of these: In all U.S.-made straight 4- and 6-cylinder vehicles with rear-wheel drive, the cylinder nearest the front of the car is called the #1 cylinder. The numbering for the rest of the cylinders (#2, #3, #4, and so on) runs in sequence back toward the firewall at the rear of the engine compartment (see Figures 12-2 and 12-3). Some foreign-built cars reverse the cylinder sequence. The #1 cylinder is at the rear, near the firewall. If you have a foreign car and no owner's manual, ask your local dealer where your #1 cylinder is. Cylinder sequence Oldsmobile .
